Tradtional Singing

WORKSHOP

Speaker 1

June 14th || 16h30

Instructores: Ana Beiradomar and André Oliveira. This is a group singing workshop in which we aim to share a repertoire of traditional songs. We also hope to bring out the organic nature of folk music: music as a means of bringing people together, as an outlet, as a form of resistance, and as a source of a sense of belonging, sharing, and community.

The session includes physical and vocal warm-ups, group dynamics exercises, sharing of sung repertoire and its sociocultural context, and an exploration of vocal polyphony. This workshop is open to anyone who wishes to participate, regardless of their knowledge or experience.

Ana Beiradomar divides her time between music, design, and photography, with a particular interest in popular culture and the intersections between the past and the present, the rural and the urban, and tradition and the contemporary.

In Barcelona, she developed a particular interest in traditional Iberian and South American music. In 2016, she returned to Portugal, where she began a continuous course of study in vocal technique, also delving deeper into traditional Portuguese music, with a special focus on singing and playing the adufe and polyphonic singing. She was a member of the group crua from 2021 to 2025. She is currently part of the duo murmura with Pedro João and leads Traditional Singing workshops with André Oliveira.

André Oliveira is a self-taught violinist specializing in popular music, as well as in the research and performance of vocal and percussion repertoire. He collects songs, instrumental pieces, and dances from a variety of traditions, ranging from Iberian and Irish to Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, Slavic, and Balkan cultures.

He has participated in numerous folk music and dance events, having co-organized the 2018 Folk Marathon in Porto. In Portugal, he has collaborated on projects such as Bugalhos, Balklavalhau, and Chulada da Ponte Velha, and facilitates events such as jam sessions and oral tradition music workshops, including the Traditional Singing workshop with Ana Beiradomar.
